What are the Qualifications for Becoming an IT Business Analyst

Information Technology (IT) Business Analysts play an important role by being responsible for their organizations technological development and direction i.e. they improve production, cost-effectiveness and workflow through their company’s business information and technical systems.

IT business analysts can work in different functions and company departments such as finance, information systems, product development and operations.

IT Business Analysts may hold job titles such as business systems Analyst, Computer Systems Analyst or Information Systems Analyst.

The easiest way to get hired for an IT business analyst job is your hands-on business analysis experience or real-world skills, not your educational credentials.

Gain hands-on experience by:
1. Taking a training program that is specifically designed to help you get hands-on business analysis experience.

2. Volunteering in the Systems or IT department of non-profit organizations and afterwards ask for a reference.

3. Through internships.

4. Offer your independent IT Business Analysis services to small businesses for a lesser fee than market value.

You do not need a specific educational background to become a business analyst. You basically can learn what business analysts do, get some hands-on experience and re-write your resume profile with that information.

There are however, employers who unwisely limit their talent search to applicants with ‘credentials’.

This is unwise because certifications do not always represent the applicant’s true skill, experience and expertise.

If you decide to earn a credential such as a college degree, seek a Bachelor of
Science in Information Technology with a concentration in Business Systems Analysis.

But remember that IT Managers are looking for hands-on skills, experience and expertise in specific knowledge areas.

    Experience………..lots of it……..start at the bottom……..Consider this………

There are thousand and thousands of talented, experience people on the street due to the economy…the competition for any job is extreme. …people will do anything for much less just to feed their kids……..I don’t expect it to get any better before 2012……

To be a BA you only need to be a master of people’s relationships and a master in the making on a topic that you like.
I don’t believe that BA is something you study, it is something you become.
Yes you must have a trunk full of tools for different times, soft tools and hard tools. People skills are at the top of the list. And at the very least be familiar with terms of the industry you are in. for me in IT is to know about use cases and implementation methodologies (various) ability to run meetings with cleaning crew and/or CIO’s, not to mention being able to communicate effectively and efficiently with both.
I believe to be a good BA is an art. I love my career as a BA!

What is the quickest way to get a start as a business analyst? Is there a course i could do online that would be a crash course in the basic theory and concepts of the business analyst? Is there a US based course that could set me on the right path?
